This county needs to focus more on making social services more widely available. Supporting citizens so that they can easily get their basic needs (mental health resources, affordable housing, and livable wages) met is more important than having armed officers on the streets, and this budget doesn't reflect that. There are significantly more funds dedicated to law enforcement than there are to community services, but the best way to prevent crimes to enable people to have their basic needs met.

The county spends a lot of money on law enforcement compared to other community services. I would prefer to see more money being spent on services that benefit our citizens. If we spend more money supporting areas that support citizens in need, we can reduce crime. It allows for people who are trained to respond to situations that are not criminal in ways that address mental health and other needs. Law enforcement would be able to focus on actual serious and violent crimes.

The county spends significantly more money on law enforcement, than on community services. The best way to prevent crime, is to give the people living wages, affordable housing and mental health resources. We know these things are lacking in Mendocino County. We could change that by moving some funds from law enforcement to community services. We need to radically rethink how we go about promoting public safety, with more emphasis on programs and supports and less on armed officers.

I support the redistribution of county funds to increase availability of community services to better serve citizens. Our law enforcement officers currently respond to numerous situations that they are not sufficiently trained for. Funding family support and mental health services in particular could take burden off of law enforcement and promote healthier outcomes for our citizens.
