6a) Discussion and Possible Action Including Direction to County Counsel to Draft Necessary Framework to Establish a Public Safety Advisory Board Consistent with Appropriate Legal and Labor Requirements
(Sponsors: Law Enforcement Oversight Ad Hoc (Supervisors Haschak and Gjerde) and Sheriff-Coroner)
I heartily support a Public Safety Advisory Board. The burden on our police is overwhelming; dealing with thefts, drugs, prostitution, domestic violence, keeping the peace, homelessness, gang violence, and more. The CAB will be good for the police as well as for our larger community.
SEIU Local 2015 stands firmly beside the Movement for Black Lives we support the formation of this citizen advisory committee as a first step in hopefully charting a different direction of law enforcement interactions with our sisters and brothers in our small towns. We thank the sponsors of of this proposal and Sheriff Kendall for his participation, but above all the local leaders and hundreds of participants of this summer's demonstrations, pushing to raise expectations in our own community.
I support the passage of item 6a. We must occupy every space possible with clarity of where we stand regarding police reform. Loudly, unapologetically and unified. Locked arm in arm on the right side of racial and social justice. We must do our part to fundamentally reform policing and that reform must occur with real accountability for law enforcement agencies as well as other county agencies within the County of Mendocino. This is our opportunity to be apart of a historical shift in humanity.
I support the creation of this board in the spirit of transparency, accountability, and the necessary transformations this country needs to ensure safety and justice for all. Thank you!
I deeply support this measure! We need to focus on preventing crime with community support. Officers who break the law and commit violent acts are a public hazard and should be disciplined and possibly fired if they cannot do their job.
Now more then ever we need public input in government. I see no reason a public oversight committee for local law enforcement to be a bad thing for this community. My biggest concern is law enforcement agencies sometimes co-op with these kinds of boards and as a result oversee themselves. If proper measures are put in place, to keep this board neutral, I do believe this will improve transparency in law enforcement policies and procedures in this community.
I strongly support establishing a Public Advisory Board. This board will act as a bridge between the sheriff's department and the community, and be able to clearly reflect the community's experience and need. In this moment, when there is so much unrest and mistrust, we need to take clear steps towards creating accountability and transparency of policing.
As Mendocino County residents, we are very concerned and support the issues raised and acted upon by the Black Live Matter movement. We feel that law enforcement accountability rises to the top of the issues facing people of color in our county, state and nation. We support the efforts to create a Public Safety Advisory Board in Mendocino County. Law enforcement, like other government agencies, should operate transparently and include BIPOC people on the board. Jef Schultz + Ellen Buechner
I support immediate action on Drafting and Establishing a Public Safety Advisory Board (PSAB). The sherif is accountable to nobody other than the citizens who vote them in. It is because of new recording devices that the general public has become aware of the rampant abuses in law enforcement which is exactly why a PSAB is a crucial and fundamental necessity for ALL policing agencies.
I support this action as a show of good faith by this governmental body that we will continue to address systemic racism within our systems and within ourselves.
I oppose agenda item 4o, the renewal of Liz Barney’s contract. I am a constituent of district 5.
