5f) Discussion and Possible Action Including Direction to Staff Regarding the Oak Tree and Oak Woodland Protection Ordinance
(Sponsor: Planning & Building Services)
Good morning Honorable Board of Supervisors,
I am opposing the adoption of an Oak Woodland Protection Ordinance. I feel that it not needed in our county and would be a burden on businesses and citizens. This one size fits all approach will not have the intended effect of protecting oak woodlands. I fear that it may actually lead to an increase in tree removal as some people may rush to get work done before the ordinance is adopted.
Another concern of mine is related to fire safety. We need to be encouraging home owners and businesses in the county to strengthen their defensible space to prevent devastating wildfires. Restricting people's ability to remove trees that present access issues for first responders or could block egress in a wind driven fire event poses a problem.
I would ask that you review and take under consideration the letter from the Mendocino County Farm Bureau, which further addresses these concerns as well as others, and vote against adopting the current Oak Woodlands Protection Ordinance. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Frost Pauli
