I strongly oppose any reduction in funding for the Mendocino County Fire Safe. They do so much to keep our county safe and educated in unprecedented times. And they could do so much *MORE* with increased funding. They already offer free chipper days county-wide, provide defensible space for income qualified seniors and handicapped, and are key to the Ukiah Valley Fire Fuels project putting in fuel breaks around the valley. They have done some great educational radio programs, a video series produced with the UC Cooperative Extension on home hardening, and just produced an all-Spanish family oriented guide to wildfire preparation. They support affiliated neighborhood groups and offer a low cost reflective sign program. There’s a lot more to do, and it’s going to take resources.
We strongly oppose reducing funding for the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council. Most emphatically, in these times of increased wildfire danger, we do not support a cut in MCFSC funding. MCFSC has been very helpful in keeping the county’s neighborhood fire safe councils informed and updated regarding fire safety measures and in helping citizens access help in making their properties more fire safe. Steve and Jean Lincoln
Please consider the importance of fire safety in our community and continue funding the Mendocino Fire Safety Council at the full $100,000 level. To reduce the operating funds by 75% as we begin what may be our worst fire season ever seems particularly ill advised.
Having to once again reinstate opposition to reduced funding for fire safety, especially in an anticipated armageddon fire season, is incomprehensible. Last year's funding supported many projects to minimize fire risk, which should only be augmented this fire season. Yes, there are many other areas to put county money, but this year, of all years, adequate funds for fire prevention efforts are critical. Please BOS, do the right thing and see that maintaining this funding as your #1 top priority.
Please do not cut funding for fire safety at this critical time. The work of the Fire Safe Council is making a difference in Pine Mountain.
“I am very opposed to reducing funding for the Mendocino Fire Safe Council. They are providing crucial education throughout the county on how to prepare for wild fires, along with helping make critical preparedness resources like signage and chipping more available. Retaining the $100,000/year funding is a drop in the bucket when compared to the potential costs of wildfire on unprepared populations!“

Wildfires have impacted all of us in Mendocino County and we must invest in fire safety and protection. We have lived here for over 40 years and the past several years have been difficult during the fire season. If it were not for the Mendocino Fire Safe Council, we would be in an even more frightening situation. Please fund this agency to the max.
I want to tell you that the work of the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council has made a difference in my Philo neighborhood. We have reflective address signs. With help from the Council's Chipper Days, we have improved emergency access with brush clearing & chipping. We have a neighborhood Fire Safe Group that coordinates emergency communications among our residents. We have an inventory & map of water sources here. None of that would have happened without the leadership of the Council. The Board needs to fully fund the Council, so they can continue this vital work.
Fire Safety should be funded at a higher level not lower. Climate change is real and droughts and fires will increase. Don’t let the public down.
I am opposed to a proposed reduction of funding for the MCFSC from $100,000 to $25,000. The work put in by Mr. Cratty and all involved have been incredibly helpful in guiding neighborhood FSCs like Deerwood not only getting formed, but getting organized and providing ideas and programs to help us stay engaged and proactive making our neighborhood safer from fire danger, and pursuing plans should a fire occur here. We need paid, consistent leadership at the MCFSC and reducing the funding for it is not the answer. BOS, please demonstrate that you understand this. Thank you.
I am opposed to a proposed reduction of funding for the MCFSC from $100,000 to $25,000. Inconsistent funding has contributed to an almost yearly turnover in the executive director position, including one director who was not paid at all for the last 2 years of her tenure. Because of a lack of funding, there was a well-intentioned attempt to bring the MCFSC under the auspices of a better-funded organization (RCD), which was ultimately unsuccessful. Because of inconsistent and inadequate funding, there is a gigantic overreliance on a small group of dedicated but overwhelmed volunteers. Inconsistent funding has led to inconsistent leadership and fragmented policies.
I have been with the MCFSC from the very beginning and understand the difficulties faced by a succession of underpaid directors struggling to deal with a nervous public. Despite the herculean efforts of some very smart and dedicated people since the MCFSC was founded by Julie Rogers and Colin Wilson in 2003, we still have no truly meaningful progress in the areas of home hardening, emergency communications, mapping, prescribed burning, escape routes, and fire ecology. We have too many one-way-in, one-way-out communities and are basically playing whack-a-mole with these important issues.
Mendocino County is falling behind some of the truly innovation things other counties are doing. Funding must be consistent from year to year to properly develop practices--based on good fire science and fire ecology--on a larger scale. This is the only way to make real progress toward building a fire-adapted community.
I feel strongly that the director should be a county employee--properly compensated for overseeing this important organization. Until then, the county has a responsibility to properly fund the MCFSC.
During this time of heightened fire danger and increased wildfire preparedness is not the time to reduce funding to the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council. As a former board chair of the MCFSC I know only too well how much they do with the minimal funding they receive. Their successful programs save lives, protect property and enhance our communities. A reduction in County support for the MCFSC is not forward looking and could hamper efforts to survive and thrive in a wildfire-prone environment.
As a long time owner and resident in Mendocino County, I am opposed to the significant reduction in funding for the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council (MCFSC). I strongly urge the council folks to reconsider their cost reduction to this great non-profit and restore the necessary funding to help preserve the areas in the fire prone area within Mendocino County. We don't want or need a Paradise-like disaster to magnify the impacts a reduction in funding to MCFSC efforts may have. Thank you for your reconsideration.
Redwood Valley
I urge you to provide full funding for the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council. They are doing an outstanding job of helping local Fire Safe groups and ALL of us be better prepared for the inevitable future fires. Reducing their budget at this time is unthinkable! If anything, it should be expanded!
