5b) Discussion and Possible Action Including Presentation Regarding Jackson State Demonstration Forest and State Response to the Board of Supervisors Resolution Requesting Scientific Review
(Sponsors: Supervisor Williams and Supervisor Gjerde)
We support an immediate moratorium on logging, cultural and tribal sovereignty, unified ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and environmentally sustainable economics to Jackson State Demonstration Forest. Since we cannot see the presentation noted on this agenda item, it is difficult to make further comment other than PLEASE SAVE THE OLD GROWTH TREES.
Sincerely, Laura & Marty Clein
I am concerned that the public has no knowledge of the remarks to be made by Cal Fire or the CNRA officials. I am concerned, from the language of the announcement, that CNRA is cooperating with Cal Fire to patch with a bandaid what need major reconstructive surgery. The current management plan CAN'T be brought up to day with a superficial gloss. The letter, attached, that I originally wrote to the Board of Forestry, details that the current management plan was last updated in 2008. We are now 4 years beyond the time due for a major review and revision. Demand an immediate moratorium on all timber-harvest related activities. Require a full revision of the Management Plan and a new accompanying Environmental impact report. Do not be satisfied with bandaids. Please read the attached letter for documentation.
Also, please ask Jessica Morse how she and CNRA can condone selling Doug Firs at a loss (Revenue of $40 per thousand versus forest management expenses of hundreds of dollars per thousand) when their harvesting annually emits 50,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. If CNRA were serious about fighting climate change, it would immediately issue an order to halt sales of Doug Fir. See the attached document for details.
