4l) Discussion and Possible Action Including Review, Adoption, Amendment, Consideration or Ratification of Legislation Pursuant to the Adopted Legislative Platform
(Sponsor: Executive Office)
It’s my understanding that the BoS will be considering the recommended Legislative goals, objectives and priorities at today’s meeting. I’ve reviewed the language presented at the General Government Committee’s last meeting and find it inadequate. Specifically, it lacks a real focus on aggressively seeking state and federal legislation and executive leadership to forge a successful federal/state/local government partnership to adapt to the challenges of climate change and insure a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future for the county.
Let me illustrate some significant weaknesses in the proposed legislative agenda - there is no recognition of the impacts that sea level rise and climate change are having on Mendocino’s coastal areas. The 2021 drought’s impact on water availability demonstrated the need to address water security aggressively. Similarly, the recent studies of sea level vulnerability done in conjunction with the Local Coastal Program updates clearly demonstrated that are harbors, coastal businesses and residences are under significant threat both in terms of property loss and the lives of the people living and working in many coastal areas.
Despite the current federal administrations denial of sea level rise and climate change, this county needs to press forward with aggressive legislative demands that the federal and state government commit to preserving a healthy coastal ecosystem that can sustain people and nature going forward.
