Sara Pierce, Int. Chief Executive Officer/Clerk of the Board | Katharine L. Elliott, Int. County Counsel
This morning, I attempted to submit e-comments on agenda items R6 and R8, but I could not log in. After I entered my credentials, the County’s Granicus system returned a “504 Gateway Time-out.” I have screenshots documenting the failure.
Please do not dismiss this by saying the system worked for other people. A public-comment system is not adequate merely because some people can use it some of the time. Every member of the public must have a reliable and accessible way to place comments into the public record before the deadline.
No online system can be guaranteed never to fail. That is precisely why the County needs a backup procedure. When the e-comment system or login fails, the County should accept comments by email, preserve them with the agenda item, and confirm their receipt. The agenda page should clearly identify that alternative method and whom to contact for immediate assistance.
I ask the Board to direct staff to document today’s failure, determine its cause, preserve my screenshots and this statement as part of the meeting record, and establish a reliable backup submission process. Public participation is not optional, and access cannot depend on whether the County’s contractor’s website happens to work for a particular resident at a particular moment.
It looks like Facebook login works but not the email login?
I don't care to log in through a Facebook app.
